Intra-Cardiac Vortex Formation
The presence of vortical flow structures that develop inside different cardiac chambers is shown to correlate with functional status of heart, and significantly affects the cardiac pumping efficiency. Early transmitral flow is a rapidly starting jet that forms a vortex ring from the boundary layers at the distal tip of the mitral valve's leaflets. During the formation process, the vortex propagates away from the mitral valve's leaflets and entrains the ambient fluid inside the left ventricle until it is pinched-off from the transmitral jet.
